I am talking about Dithi of Deezden whose blog I happen to follow with much interest. Dithi is an Indian artist living in Geneva, Switzerland. I don't draw or paint but I am interested in the creative process and love how Dithi explains how and why she paints the way she does. For example, this beautiful lady was inspired by a picture of a Garhwali bride. Art is as much tactile as it is visual and looking at this painting, don't you just want to reach out and touch the jewels on that nose ring?
But it's the eyes that will draw you in...'Nostalgia' from her series 'Portrait of a Lover'

'Nostalgia'
The emotion in the eyes can change in a brushstroke....

'Sweet Seduction' from her series 'Portrait of a lover'
There is an earthiness to the women in the pictures and as someone commented on her blog and I totally agree, it is reminiscent of Gauguin.
Though it is hard for me to choose a favorite, her painting 'Amrita Devi' deserves a special mention. It is based on the life of a rural 'Bishnoi' woman from Rajasthan, India. Many, many years ago Bishnoi women chose to lay down their lives rather than allow trees to be cut down. The You Tube video that accompanies this painting tells you the amazing story!
To read more about her art and the inspiration behind the paintings, visit Dithi at her blog, Deezden. Dithi sells her paintings and prints via her Etsy shop.

Updated 4/2: I also wanted to add that Dithi accepts commissions and watching her translate an idea into a work of art is awesome!
Bonjour Aditi!!! Such a beautiful post, I feel like a proud mom of my girls:)! Thank you.d.
ReplyDeleteAditi,
ReplyDeleteI too have been enjoying her work tremendously... as an artist who has shied away from faces ... I am always intrigued by her thought process. Love you featuring her work ... every artist needs to be acclaimed and appreciated. Great job ...

ReplyDeleteThe pleasure was all mine!
Rajee, glad you liked it!
ReplyDeleteAditi, Thanks a lot for this post. I visited Dithi's blog too .. She is a great artist, actually gifted would be a better word.. The choice of colors and the immense emotions on the faces inspite of mostly serene settings .. it is just great !
ReplyDeleteI am a follower of Dithi's blog and her art. What an amazing artist, love her work:)
ReplyDeleteThanks for showcasing Dithi's work. I popped over to her blog and was blown away by her art. Lovely!
ReplyDeleteI love those parrot-laced ones...they really strike a chord for me with my flocks of visiting wild parrots that raid the cashew trees in my garden.
These certainly add a vibrant splash of colour to any space which showcases them. Striking stuff!
ReplyDelete@p You are so right! Which is why I am in no hurry to post newer posts- I enjoy looking at these paintings every time I visit my blog ;)!
ReplyDeleteDithi is a phenomenal artist & a wonderful human being. And its so beautiful that you've chosen the 'eyes' in her paintings as a focus of your post. That makes it all the more interesting. Proves the credo- put 10 artists in the same place & they will draw 10 completely diff pics.
ReplyDeleteI love her work...especially the one with the nath.
ReplyDeleteoh lovely.. thanks for sharing this!!
ReplyDeleteWonderful work. So colourful and vibrant.
